A Forecasting Platform Participant Made $Nearly Half a Million from Bets Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.

A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the end of January rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the president had been seized.

One account, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

However these probabilities had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other platform users also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on recently seeks to ban federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
