Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, demons, and sinister influences increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

Episode 3 finished on a major cliffhanger and presented the premier party of heroes who will split off from the main group to begin their separate journey, apart from the additional parties.

This warrior group features Teor (portrayed by Travis), the agile character (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

With 13 cast members, it was obvious from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

This explains, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might appear unsuited, but the events of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a intense initial meeting with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading the secret base, assaulting Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then paid off his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each member has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan knows the region and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • But, their status as key figures in House Halovar could enable the team reach areas they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule the city for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The healer defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them no alternative but to head to the northern region in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

According to the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the rest of the players to round up the Explorers and Planners parties.

Fans can look forward to finding out which players will be assigned to which table in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
