Minister States MoD Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing secret information in any vehicles.

Security Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss secret material while riding in China-made cars.

The minister said that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Context

The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This wider defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of government operations, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
