Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
